Occupational Therapy: Training Postural Control for Functional Upper Limb Prosthesis Use
نویسنده
چکیده
Healthcare professionals working with upper limb (UL) amputees more often than not, have the privilege of working with a generally healthy patient population. Traumatic loss of the upper limb in previously active and productive persons does not remove their intrinsic motivation for active participation in life. As they recover from the abrupt change in their functional status, this innate drive may be somewhat diminished for a time. However, with a supportive environment for recovery, it is possible to return to a healthy and productive lifestyle. It is incumbent upon rehabilitation professionals to create optimal conditions for patient success. Meeting this challenge requires the coordinated efforts of a rehabilitation team focused on the dynamic functional use of a prosthesis by the primary team memberthe patient.

Effect of an 8-Weeks of Comprehensive Corrective Protocol on Postural control, low Back Pain, Gait Speed and Quality of Life on Unilateral Transtibial Amputees
Aims: Amputation makes a person susceptible to postural deviation and compensatory movements and causes reduced performance, biocompatibility, pain, and dissatisfaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of a comprehensive rehabilitation protocol on indicators of postural control, back pain, quality of life, and gait speed in adults with unilateral lower lim...

[Purpose] This study was aimed at investigating the preliminary therapeutic efficacy and usefulness of canoe game-based virtual reality training for stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Ten stroke patients were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG; n=5) or a control group (CG; n=5). Patients in both groups participated in a conventional rehabilitation program, but those in the EG a...
متن کاملUpper-limb injections of botulinum toxin-A in children with cerebral palsy: a critical review of the literature and clinical implications for occupational therapists.
This paper provides a review of the research literature that reports on the effectiveness of botulinum toxin-A (BtA) to reduce tone and improve functional use of the upper limbs of children who have cerebral palsy. Evaluation of the findings suggest that injections of BtA have demonstrated promising short-term results by reducing tone and increasing active range of motion in some children. Posi...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the impact of forced use therapy on posture in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. DESIGN Single group pre- and post-training assessments. SUBJECTS Eight children (mean age 10.5 years (standard deviation 1.26 years)) with hemiplegic cerebral palsy Levels I and II on the gross motor function classification scale. METHODS All participants underwent 12 days (6 h/da...
متن کاملTraining protocol for a powered shoulder prosthesis.
There is a scarcity of literature on rehabilitation training protocols for upper-limb prosthesis use. Seminal textbooks and articles describe protocols for training individuals to use conventional body-powered, myoelectric, or passive prosthetic devices and were written prior to the introduction of multifunction prosthetic hands and more advanced prosthetic technologies [1–3]. Furthermore, deta...
